McLanahan Sizers

McLanahan Sizers

Efficient Low-Profile Crushing for Mining and Mineral Processing

McLanahan Sizers are direct-drive crushing machines designed for the primary, secondary and tertiary reduction of friable, low-silica materials. They are particularly well suited for materials such as coal, salt, gypsum, phosphate, limestone, bauxite, petroleum coke, lignite, trona, clay, shale and other similar minerals.

With a low-profile design, slow-speed crushing action and direct-drive arrangement, McLanahan Sizers provide an efficient solution where high throughput, controlled product sizing and low fines generation are important.

How McLanahan Sizers Work

McLanahan Sizers use two parallel crushing rolls fitted with replaceable teeth or crushing segments. The rolls rotate at relatively low speed and either toward or away from each other, depending on the Sizer configuration.

As the material enters the crushing chamber, the teeth grip and pull the material into the crushing zone. The material is then compressed and broken between the rolls.

Material that is already at the required size can pass between or around the crushing rolls, reducing unnecessary re-crushing and helping to minimize the generation of fines.

Different tooth profiles, roll designs and materials can be selected according to the characteristics of the feed material and the required product size.

Product Size Control

For Primary and Secondary Sizers, the crusher setting is primarily controlled by the distance between the two roll bodies.

Adjusting the roll spacing allows the operator to control the required product size. McLanahan also offers hydraulic product-size adjustment on its Primary and Secondary Sizers, providing flexibility when product specifications change.

Tertiary Sizers use adjustable sizing combs to control the crushing setting and compensate for wear.

Reduction Ratio

McLanahan Sizers are typically selected for applications requiring approximately a 4:1 reduction ratio.

The appropriate reduction ratio depends on the feed size, required product size, material characteristics and Sizer configuration.

Low-Speed Crushing

The low-speed operation of the Sizer helps reduce excessive fines generation while providing high torque for demanding crushing applications.

The direct-drive arrangement also eliminates the need for some conventional transmission components, contributing to a compact machine design and potentially reducing maintenance and operating costs.

Handling Sticky and Clay-Rich Materials

One of the major advantages of Sizers is their ability to handle materials containing clay and other contaminants that can create problems for conventional crushers.

The crushing rolls and tooth configuration are designed to grab and pull material into the crushing zone, while the intermeshing components help prevent clay and sticky material from building up inside the machine.

Low-Profile Design

The compact, low-profile design of McLanahan Sizers makes them suitable for applications where installation height and available space are restricted.

The direct-drive configuration also allows the Sizer to be installed in movable arrangements. In suitable installations, the machine can be mounted on rails and moved away from the material flow to facilitate maintenance.
